Correct the Name on Aadhaar Through UIDAI

UIDAI handles Aadhaar name corrections through its official enrolment/update process, with document rules and lifetime update limits that can affect whether a request is accepted. This guide covers checking the record and prior updates, selecting valid evidence, visiting an authorized centre, submitting and tracking a request, and verifying the result. It does not determine which name you should use or guarantee approval. Check UIDAI's current documents, forms, charges and exception process before acting. Government Form Checklist can track generic document labels locally; do not enter Aadhaar numbers, OTPs or document scans.

MISSION Request an Aadhaar name correction through UIDAI using an accepted supporting document, then verify the official decision and updated record.

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Check the exact record and type of correction; verify prior name updates and current exception rules; select a valid UIDAI-accepted proof; locate a current authorized update centre; submit and review the captured name; track the decision or follow the exception route; then verify and securely use the updated record.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Confirm the record and the exact name change you need

Sign in only through UIDAI's official service to inspect your Aadhaar demographic record. Write down the exact spelling currently shown and the exact spelling supported by your valid identity document. Decide whether you need a minor spelling correction, a surname addition or change, or a first/full-name change; the evidence rules can differ. UIDAI does not update a name through the mAadhaar app, and its current guidance directs name corrections to an Aadhaar enrolment/update centre. If the issue is actually a name mismatch in PAN, passport, or another government record, check that issuing authority's process too rather than changing Aadhaar by assumption. For a child's record or a complex name change, read UIDAI's specific route or ask its helpline before booking.

  2. 02

Check how many name updates have already been used

Before paying or visiting a centre, check UIDAI's current limit for name updates and how it counts previous requests. UIDAI's published guidance currently says name data may be updated twice within the standard process. If you have already used the permitted updates, do not file the same request again expecting routine approval; UIDAI describes an exception process that starts with an update request and then requires the enrolment ID and specified evidence to be sent through its official regional-office route after a limit-exceeded rejection. Exception handling is not automatic and can require stronger proof, such as a Gazette notification for a full-name change. Confirm the current exception instructions directly with UIDAI because procedures and supporting evidence can change.

  3. 03

Select an accepted document that shows the name you are requesting

Open UIDAI's current acceptable-document list and choose a Proof of Identity document that is valid for your case and displays the requested name. Check UIDAI's notes as well as the row in the table: the document must be current, verifiable, issued to you, and the name entered on Aadhaar is generally replicated from the accepted evidence. For a first or full-name change, UIDAI's current help may require a Gazette notification together with older proof; use the exact exception/name-change rules that apply to your situation. Do not rely on an old blog, an unlisted document, or a spelling typed into a form when your evidence shows something different. Use Government Form Checklist to track generic evidence labels only; never enter your Aadhaar number or upload the evidence itself.

  4. 04

Find an official update centre and confirm the service

Use UIDAI's official centre locator or Aadhaar Seva Kendra site to find a centre that handles demographic updates, then check its appointment and walk-in instructions before travelling. The name change is not currently an online demographic-update service; UIDAI directs residents to an enrolment/update centre. Confirm the centre address, hours, available services, and whether an appointment is required on the day you plan to go. Avoid search advertisements or agents that claim they can change Aadhaar instantly. If you cannot confirm that a location is an authorized centre, contact UIDAI through its published helpline or use the UIDAI locator rather than handing over identity documents to an intermediary.

  5. 05

Submit the request in person and review the captured name

Take your original supporting document and the Aadhaar information the centre requires. At the centre, request the name update, present the evidence, and inspect the name entered by the operator character by character before confirming submission. Ask about the current displayed charge for this service and pay only the official fee; retain the receipt and acknowledgement or enrolment/update ID. UIDAI's regulations and fees can be revised, so use the amount displayed by the centre rather than a fixed price copied from an old page. Collect your original document before leaving. Do not share an OTP, PIN, password, or Aadhaar authentication code with an agent, and do not allow another person to submit a different spelling than the one your evidence supports.

  6. 06

Track the request and follow the official exception route if needed

Use UIDAI's official status-check service and the acknowledgement details to see whether the request is under review, accepted, or rejected. A submitted request does not guarantee the update: UIDAI verifies the information and supporting evidence, and can reject a request for document mismatch, an invalid proof, an operator/data-entry issue, or an exceeded update limit. If rejected, read the stated reason before taking another step. Correct a genuine data-entry error through UIDAI's published process; if the limit was exceeded, follow UIDAI's exception procedure using the required enrolment ID and evidence rather than creating repeated duplicate requests. For unclear status or an unexpected rejection, contact UIDAI through its official helpline or grievance channel and keep the acknowledgement for reference.

  7. 07

Verify the updated Aadhaar and protect the record

After UIDAI confirms completion, retrieve the updated e-Aadhaar through the official UIDAI download service and check the name, date of birth, and other displayed fields against the approved request. If the name still differs, do not assume that a submitted application changed the record; contact UIDAI with the acknowledgement or request reference and ask for the correction route. Keep the receipt and supporting documents securely, and share the updated Aadhaar only through a verified recipient channel and for a stated purpose. The checklist tool contains only generic task labels, not identity numbers or scans. If another government record still shows a different name, follow that agency's own correction process instead of editing the Aadhaar file itself.
