Complete the 2027-28 FAFSA for U.S. College Aid
As of October 6, 2026, Federal Student Aid says the 2027-28 FAFSA is available for attendance between July 1, 2027 and June 30, 2028. Confirm the form year and all deadlines live before starting. The FAFSA is a U.S. federal aid application; eligibility and school awards depend on the official form and each institution. This guide does not determine aid eligibility or calculate an award. Use the official StudentAid.gov form for private financial information; never put Social Security numbers, tax records, family finances or account credentials in Nirmion.
MISSION Guide a student through selecting the correct FAFSA award year, coordinating required contributors, submitting the official form, and completing school follow-up without exposing private financial data.

- 01
Choose the correct FAFSA award year and capture every deadline
On October 6, 2026, Federal Student Aid identifies the 2027-28 FAFSA as available for attendance from July 1, 2027 through June 30, 2028; confirm the currently available year on the live StudentAid.gov site because forms and dates change. Record each intended college's financial-aid priority deadline, your state of legal residence deadline and the federal deadline. School and state deadlines may be earlier, and some state programs require an additional application. If you are unsure which year covers a term or summer session, ask the college aid office before submitting. The Education Grant Checklist (tool 41789) can hold only generic reminders and due dates; do not enter family income or identity data.
- 02
Set up the student account and identify required contributors
Use the official StudentAid.gov account process and make sure the student can access their own account and recovery method. The form determines whether a parent or spouse contributor is required based on answers in the student section; do not assume a student is dependent or independent based on where they live or who claims them on taxes. If a contributor is required, invite the correct person through the FAFSA's built-in invitation flow and ask them to create/use their own StudentAid.gov account. Contributors enter and sign their own sections; they should not share passwords with the student or anyone helping. For unusual circumstances, dependency questions, or account access problems, follow Federal Student Aid's current help links or contact the school aid office.
- 03
Complete the student and contributor sections in the official form
Open FAFSA only from the official StudentAid.gov domain, select the correct award year and follow the live prompts. Answer identity, residency and student-circumstance questions accurately, then review the form's federal tax information consent/approval step; Federal Student Aid says this consent is required for federal student aid even if the person did not file taxes. Each person supplies only their own requested information in their own authenticated section. If a financial or family change means the form does not reflect the current ability to pay, submit accurately and later contact each school about its professional-judgment or aid-adjustment process rather than changing answers to force a result. Never put Social Security numbers, tax records, bank balances or login details in Nirmion.
- 04
Review all answers, obtain required signatures and submit
Before signing, expand and check the student answers and contributor status, verify each selected school, and correct errors in the official form. The student and each required contributor must complete their own signature steps; a submitted-looking student section can remain unfinished if a required contributor has not signed. Submit using the live portal and save the confirmation/reference privately. The Department says the FAFSA is free; do not pay a third-party site that imitates the government form. Some forms process immediately while others may take one to three days, so check the StudentAid.gov dashboard for the processed status and FAFSA Submission Summary. If the portal shows an error, use the official help center and preserve the exact on-screen error privately.
- 05
Check the Submission Summary and complete each school's follow-up
After processing, the student (not contributors) reviews the FAFSA Submission Summary in their StudentAid.gov account. Check the FAFSA answers, listed schools, processing date and Next Steps; make corrections when the official page identifies an error and respond promptly if a school selects the application for verification. An eligibility overview or Student Aid Index is not a guaranteed award: each school makes its own offer after admission. Track each school's separate document request, verification deadline and aid offer through that school's verified portal, and use the school's aid office for missing or conflicting information. If you miss a priority date, contact the school to ask what options remain. Keep private documents and award amounts in a restricted personal system; use the Nirmion checklist only for non-sensitive task reminders.
