Compare U.S. online private-car offers safely

A seller-focused checklist for comparing written offers for a U.S. private-party car sale, checking payment claims, and planning the handoff. Payment methods and title-transfer requirements vary; verify the rules with the marketplace, payment provider, and your state motor-vehicle agency before accepting an offer.

MISSION Compare buyer offers and screen suspicious payment proposals before handing over a privately owned car.

Normalize the offers, check the communication and payment through their original services, reject overpayment-refund requests, confirm your state’s title steps, and protect the vehicle’s stored personal data before handoff.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Write each offer down on the same terms

For each prospective buyer, record the offer amount, date, contact channel, inspection request, proposed payment method, pickup or delivery plan, and any conditions such as a deposit or third-party collection. Compare like with like: label what is promised, what you have independently checked, and what is still pending. Do not send account credentials, verification codes, or unnecessary identity documents to compare an offer. Save the original marketplace messages and the payment service’s own terms.

  2. 02

Check the offer in the channel where it was made

Open the marketplace or payment app yourself using its known app or website; do not rely on an emailed receipt, text alert, screenshot, or link supplied by the buyer. Confirm that the offer and any claimed payment appear in the correct account, and read that service’s seller-protection and dispute rules before agreeing. If the buyer changes the amount, asks you to leave the marketplace, or introduces a separate shipping agent or refund, pause and verify the change with the service through its published support channel. Never give a stranger a one-time verification code as proof that you are a real seller.

  3. 03

Compare the real amount and the conditions attached

Compare the stated sale price, any documented costs you will bear, the inspection or collection conditions, and how the payment is supposed to be made. Keep estimates separate from confirmed fees and do not treat a higher headline offer as better if it depends on an unverified payment or unusual refund. If a loan payoff, lien, co-owner, out-of-state transfer, or title discrepancy applies, stop and get the required instructions from the lienholder and your state motor-vehicle agency before promising a handoff date.

  4. 04

Reject overpayment checks and verify payment status directly

Do not accept a check above the agreed price and send the difference back. A deposited check can appear in an account before the bank discovers it is fake and reverses the funds. Do not use that apparent balance to buy gift cards, cryptocurrency, money orders, or to wire money for a buyer. If an offer uses escrow or an online payment service, choose and contact the service independently, confirm its terms and transaction status in your own account, and ask your bank or provider what a pending or available balance means before releasing the vehicle. Walk away from pressure to pay an unexpected fee or refund to complete the sale.

  5. 05

Check state transfer rules, protect vehicle data, and keep proof

Before the appointment, use the current official motor-vehicle agency for your state to confirm the title endorsement, bill-of-sale or odometer documents, seller notice, deadlines, and any special requirements for your vehicle. State rules differ; a directory or another state’s page is only a starting point. At handoff, follow the state’s instructions, keep copies of the signed documents and the marketplace/payment records, and submit any seller notice the state requires. Follow the vehicle manual to remove saved contacts, addresses, routes, garage codes, app access, and connected subscriptions; a factory reset alone may not cancel every linked service. Mark the record complete only when the agreed handoff and required seller filing are documented.
