Compare travel insurance for an overseas trip from India

A comparison process for a traveler arranging overseas trip cover through an India-authorized insurer. Compare the actual policy schedule, customer information sheet and current wording for your destination, dates, travelers and declared activities. Coverage for pre-existing conditions, cancellation, medical treatment and evacuation depends on the specific policy; this guide does not recommend a product or replace insurer or licensed-adviser advice.

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Set the trip facts and risks, check any destination or visa cover requirements, shortlist registered insurers, compare current policy terms and exclusions, disclose accurate details through the insurer's official channel, and save the final certificate and claim instructions.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Write down the trip facts and existing protection

Record destination and transit countries, travel dates, trip purpose, each traveler's age band and residence, planned activities and any organizer or visa cover requirement. Check existing health, card, employer or home cover and note what it excludes. Keep diagnoses and identifying information private; enter them only into an insurer's authorized quote/application flow when requested.

  2. 02

Decide which risks you need the policy to address

List the events that matter for this trip, such as overseas medical costs, emergency evacuation/repatriation, trip cancellation or curtailment, delay, missed connection, baggage or activity-specific cover. Confirm any minimum cover required by the destination/visa authority or tour, school or employer in its own current instructions; do not assume a policy is mandatory or that any policy automatically satisfies the requirement.

  3. 03

Compare the current policy wording, not just the premium

Get each insurer's current policy schedule, customer information sheet and full wording. Use the Nirmion Travel Insurance Checklist to organize a side-by-side review. Compare benefit caps and sub-limits, deductibles, covered cancellation reasons, emergency-assistance arrangements, claim notice steps, exclusions for activities and how pre-existing conditions are treated. IRDAI specifically says pre-existing-condition cover in overseas travel policies depends on the policy terms. Ask the insurer to clarify unclear wording in writing; do not infer cover from an advertisement or benefit heading.

  4. 04

Check the insurer and confirm the final offer

Verify the insurer against IRDAI's current non-life insurer list and use its official site or an appropriately authorized channel. Before paying, disclose the facts the proposal asks for accurately, then compare the final quote and schedule against the exact trip, travelers, dates, destination, limits, exclusions and any required visa/organizer wording. Resolve mismatches or unanswered questions with the insurer or a licensed adviser before purchase.

  5. 05

Save the certificate and prepare for a claim

After purchase, check that the certificate names the correct travelers and trip dates and reflects the agreed cover. Save the policy schedule, full wording, premium receipt, claim-notification instructions and 24-hour assistance contacts offline. Note what the insurer requires you to do before arranging non-emergency treatment or evacuation, how quickly a claim must be reported and which receipts/documents to keep. Carry emergency details separately from the insured documents.
