Compare Indian Bank Fixed-Deposit Offers Without Chasing the Headline Rate
Use this guide to compare domestic retail fixed deposits offered by banks in India. Rates and conditions can change, and an advertised rate may depend on tenure, deposit size, customer category, payout choice, or a limited offer. Compare dated official bank documents for the exact amount and dates you are considering. This workflow does not recommend a bank, forecast future rates, calculate personal tax, or cover NBFC/company deposits, small-savings schemes, or NRE/NRO/FCNR deposits. The Compound Interest Calculator can model a hypothetical reinvestment scenario only when its compounding assumptions match the bank's written quote; it does not fetch rates or model bank-specific penalties, tax, or deposit insurance.
MISSION Compare current domestic retail bank fixed-deposit offers on matched terms, liquidity, payout, applicable protection, and tax questions before asking the bank for a final quote.

What happens outside this browser tab?
Set comparable requirements; identify the legal deposit-taking institution and check current DICGC status and aggregation; collect dated official rate and product terms; match tenure, amount, customer category, and payout; model only equivalent reinvestment scenarios; read access, penalty, tax-withholding, and maturity terms; then verify the complete offer directly with the bank before placing funds.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Define the comparison before looking at rates
Write down the amount, the date you may need the money, whether you need periodic interest or a maturity payout, and any eligibility category that applies to the depositor. Compare only the same deposit currency, residency/product class, amount band, tenure, and interest payout pattern. This page is scoped to domestic retail bank deposits in India; exclude NRE/NRO/FCNR products, NBFC or company deposits, and government small-savings schemes because they follow different terms and protections. Do not share account numbers, PAN, or other personal identifiers in a comparison worksheet.
- 02
Check the bank and understand the insurance limit
Confirm the institution's exact legal name and current status on DICGC's official list of insured banks, then read the DICGC depositor FAQ. DICGC says eligible deposits including fixed deposits are insured up to the applicable limit, with principal and interest aggregated for a depositor in the same right and capacity across branches; separate accounts or branches at one bank do not each create a fresh limit. Verify what counts with DICGC and the bank for the depositor's ownership arrangement. Coverage is not a guarantee of immediate access, a particular interest rate, or coverage for an institution that is not an insured bank.
- 03
Collect dated rate evidence from each bank
For each candidate, save or note the bank's official rate table and the date checked. Record the exact tenure or slab, amount threshold, general or eligible customer category, effective date, and whether the displayed rate is an annual rate or a special offer. A search result, comparison blog, old PDF, or promotional banner is not enough to establish the rate available today. If a rate table is dynamic or does not show the exact case, use the bank's official calculator or request a written quote and record the quote date and assumptions; recheck it before funding because rates may change.
- 04
Match payout method and maturity conditions
Separate cumulative or reinvestment deposits from periodic-interest payout deposits. Note the compounding frequency, payout dates, whether interest is paid at a discounted rate for periodic payouts, maturity date, renewal default, and instructions needed to receive principal at maturity. RBI's 2025 FAQ describes reinvestment deposits as reinvesting interest until maturity and says overdue matured domestic deposits are handled under specified rules; the bank's own product terms still control the chosen offer. Compare like with like and retain the rate sheet or written quote that supports each row instead of silently treating differently paid interest as equivalent.
- 05
Model a return only when the calculator assumptions match
Use Compound Interest Calculator only for a clearly labelled hypothetical scenario. Enter the principal, stated annual rate, compounding frequency, and term that match the bank's reinvestment quote; check whether the calculator assumes a nominal annual rate compounded at fixed intervals and whether the bank uses the same convention. Do not use this result as a bank quote or as the result for monthly/quarterly interest payouts, changing rates, taxes, TDS, penalty-adjusted early closure, or special schemes. If assumptions are uncertain, leave the calculation out and ask the bank for its written maturity value for the exact deposit.
- 06
Read access, penalty, and exception terms in the selected bank's policy
For each offer, find the current written rules for premature and partial withdrawal, the penalty or reduced rate, minimum holding period, exceptions, and whether the deposit is callable. RBI's current FAQ says banks may levy premature-withdrawal penalties under their board-approved policy and that the components should be disclosed when accepting the deposit; the exact procedure is bank-specific. Check whether an overdraft or loan against the deposit is actually offered and its own rate and conditions. A higher headline rate may not suit a depositor who could need the funds early, and a calculator cannot quantify a bank-specific closure amount unless the bank provides it.
- 07
Record tax questions and compare the complete offer
Record the bank's current tax-withholding statement and any documents or declarations it says may apply, but do not treat TDS as the depositor's final tax liability or assume that a declaration eliminates tax. Personal tax depends on current law and the person's circumstances; verify the current Income Tax Department rules or ask a qualified tax adviser. Finish a comparison table with source link, checked date, matched deposit assumptions, gross maturity or payout quote, access limits, insurance check, and unresolved questions. Contact the bank through a verified official channel for a final quote and confirmation before placing funds; keep the confirmation and maturity instructions with the deposit record.
