Banking · THE NO-PANIC PLAN
Close or prematurely withdraw an Indian bank fixed deposit
This guide covers a fixed/term deposit held at an Indian bank by its depositor. It does not cover NBFC deposits, post-office or government small-savings schemes, foreign-currency/NRI deposits, or a deceased depositor's claim; those have separate terms and routes. Your deposit advice, bank's current deposit policy and live channel control maturity instructions, premature withdrawal eligibility, any interest recalculation or penalty, joint-holder authorization and payout details. Do not treat a public rate table as a guaranteed quote for your deposit, and never provide a bank password, PIN, CVV or OTP to anyone offering to close it.
MISSION Help an Indian bank depositor verify maturity and premature-closure terms, place the correct fixed-deposit payout instruction through the bank, and reconcile the proceeds safely.

What happens outside this browser tab?
Identify the bank, deposit type, maturity date and holders; decide whether to wait for maturity or request premature closure and review the applicable bank terms and proceeds estimate; choose the bank's official online or branch channel and authorize the exact deposit instruction; save the request/closure advice and verify principal, interest, deductions and payout account; if the bank's calculation or handling appears wrong, raise a documented bank complaint and use the current RBI escalation route if eligible.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Identify the deposit and who is authorized to instruct the bank
Open the original deposit advice or the bank's official deposit page and confirm the account/deposit reference, product, opening date, maturity date, depositor names, payout account and maturity instruction. Check whether it is a regular callable bank term deposit, a locked/non-callable product, a tax-saving deposit, or a special scheme; those may have different closure rules. For a joint deposit, read the mandate and the bank's current authorization requirements before one holder submits an instruction. If the depositor has died or the deposit is not a standard bank FD, stop here and use the bank's separate claim or product process rather than following an individual closure route.
- 02
Compare maturity payout with premature withdrawal terms
If maturity is near, check whether the deposit will auto-renew, pay out to a linked account, or require a maturity instruction before the date. For an early withdrawal, read the bank's deposit contract and current board-approved policy for the exact product and amount. RBI's current Commercial Banks Interest Rate on Deposits Directions allow a bank to levy a premature-withdrawal penalty under its disclosed policy; the interest payable may be recalculated for the actual period held. Ask the bank for a written estimate showing principal, interest basis, penalty/other deductions and net proceeds before confirming. Do not assume the advertised rate, another bank's penalty, or a general FD calculator determines your actual payout.
- 03
Submit the maturity or closure instruction using the bank's own channel
Sign in by navigating directly to the bank's official app/site, or visit the branch holding the deposit if the online option is unavailable or the mandate requires branch authorization. Select the correct deposit reference and choose maturity payout, renewal, or premature closure deliberately; these are different instructions. Confirm the receiving account, holder details, date and net proceeds shown before final authorization. If a joint-holder or signed request is required, use only the form and submission route the bank specifies. Never use a link from an unexpected message, disclose an OTP/PIN/CVV, or let a caller control your screen. If you submit in person, retain a stamped copy or acknowledgement.
- 04
Save the closure advice and reconcile the money received
Download or request the bank's acknowledgement and final deposit-closure advice. Verify the deposit reference, closure/maturity date, principal, interest period/rate used, penalty or tax deductions shown, net proceeds and destination account. Compare the transfer with the written estimate and your account statement; keep the interest certificate and tax-deduction record for your own tax filing records. A completed closure request is not proof that funds reached the correct account. If a credit is missing or figures differ, do not submit repeated withdrawal requests: contact the bank through its official service channel with the acknowledgement and ask for a transaction-level explanation.
- 05
Raise a documented complaint if the closure or calculation is disputed
Write first to the bank's grievance channel with the deposit reference, closure request date, acknowledgement, expected-versus-received amount and the specific explanation you seek. Keep the bank's complaint number and every response. The RBI Complaint Management System may be used for an eligible complaint if the bank's reply is unsatisfactory or it has not responded within the period in the current RBI scheme; verify scope, exclusions and filing limits from RBI's current FAQ before applying. Do not submit the fixed-deposit receipt or account statement to a public Nirmion tool, and do not rely on an outside party promising a guaranteed recovery.
