Close an SBI Savings Account and Move Recurring Payments
Closing a savings account can interrupt salary credits, bill autopays, UPI links, or benefits if you close it before moving them. This guide covers a personal State Bank of India savings account and follows SBI's published depositor-rights policy: request closure in writing, provide the stated reason, return the passbook and unused cheque leaves, and include all joint holders' instructions. Exact account variants, current charges, and special cases can differ. Move scheduled payments first, ask SBI for the current branch instructions, and keep the acknowledgement until the closure is confirmed.

Confirm the account type and all holders; list incoming credits and outgoing mandates; move each payment to a replacement account and test it; check pending transactions, linked services, special restrictions, and current SBI charges; submit the written closure request with the required items; settle the remaining balance using SBI's approved method; then verify closure and update every payer or payee record.

One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Confirm the SBI account type and who must authorize closure
Check whether this is a personal savings account, a joint account, or a special product such as BSBD, PMJDY, minor, NRI, deceased-depositor settlement, or lien/frozen account. This guide applies to an ordinary personal SBI savings account. SBI's published policy says a closure request should be in writing, state a reason, and for a joint account be requested by all joint holders. If a holder is deceased, the account is restricted, the account secures a loan, or the product has special terms, ask SBI which settlement route applies before moving funds or submitting a standard request.
- 02
List every incoming credit and scheduled payment
Review recent statements and note salary, pension, benefits, refunds, subscriptions, utility bills, loan instalments, insurance premiums, standing instructions, NACH mandates, UPI autopay, and any cheque still in circulation. For each item, identify the payer or biller and next due date, then change its destination or debit account through that organization's official channel. Bill Payment Calendar (688) can hold generic payee labels and dates while you switch; do not put SBI account numbers, card details, credentials, or transaction screenshots into Nirmion. Keep the SBI account open while updates are pending.
- 03
Test the replacement account and stop new activity on the old one
Wait for important credits and debits to appear against the replacement account, and confirm the old account has no uncleared cheque, pending transfer, subscription retry, or scheduled bank instruction. Cancel or change standing instructions and recurring mandates with the relevant bank, merchant, insurer, lender, or utility; closing the account alone may cause a payment failure or an overdue notice. If a credit is still expected, contact the payer to update its records and allow time for its next payment cycle. Keep enough balance to cover transactions already authorized and any charges SBI confirms.
- 04
Check SBI's current closure terms and branch instructions
Use SBI's current official policy and service-charge schedule, or call the Contact Centre/home branch, to confirm the correct closure route for this account variant, current charges, and how the remaining balance can be paid. SBI's account rules say service charges can change and directs customers to the current website, Contact Centre, or branch; do not rely on an old PDF or a fee quoted in a forum. Ask what identity check is needed, whether the home branch is required, and whether any linked deposit, loan, lien, or unresolved transaction must be settled first.
- 05
Submit the written request and the items SBI asks you to return
Prepare the SBI closure request with the account holder's recorded signature, the reason for closure, the requested settlement instructions, and all joint holders' signatures where applicable. SBI's published policy lists the passbook, unused cheque leaves, and ATM-cum-debit card with the request; it specifies cutting the card across the chip or magnetic strip. Confirm the current branch instructions before destroying the card, and block it first if it is missing or may be misused. Submit the request only to SBI through its official branch or approved channel and obtain a dated acknowledgement or reference number.
- 06
Settle the remaining balance and retain proof
Ask SBI to confirm the exact balance after pending items and any applicable current charges, then choose the settlement method SBI permits for your account. Verify the destination account details privately before authorizing a transfer; do not send credentials or a signed blank form. Keep the receipt, closure-request acknowledgement, any statement showing the final settlement, and the branch or Contact Centre reference in a private folder. If SBI returns the request, follow the specific reason it gives instead of submitting duplicate forms with conflicting details.
- 07
Confirm closure and resolve an unresolved bank complaint
Check with SBI that the account is closed, the final balance was settled, and no new debit or credit is still expected. Update any remaining payer, refund source, or benefit record and retain the final statement and closure confirmation. If SBI does not complete the request or the handling is disputed, first lodge a written complaint through SBI's official grievance route and retain its reference. RBI's current Integrated Ombudsman Scheme lets a customer escalate a covered service complaint after the bank rejects it or does not respond within the prescribed period; use the current RBI CMS guidance for eligibility and timing.
