Government & Identity · THE NO-PANIC PLAN

Check Whether an Indian PAN Is Active and Its Details Match

Use the Income Tax Department's Verify PAN Status service to check whether your PAN details match the Department's database and whether the PAN is active. The current service is available before login and sends a one-time password to a mobile number you can access. This is an information check: it does not update or activate a PAN, correct a mismatch, or track a new PAN application. Use only the official government portal and handle any correction through a separate official service.

MISSION Help an Indian taxpayer check their own PAN status and compare the official portal's result with their existing record without exposing PAN details or confusing verification with application tracking.

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Open the Department's pre-login Verify PAN Status service; enter your PAN, full name, date of birth, and accessible mobile number on the government page; validate the time-limited OTP; read the displayed status as an information result; then use the Department's current correction, Aadhaar-link, or jurisdictional-officer route if the result requires action. Keep the PAN and result out of Nirmion tools.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Decide whether you need a personal status check or another service

Use Verify PAN Status to check your own existing PAN record and the status shown by the Income Tax Department. It can confirm whether the details you enter match the Department's database and whether the PAN is active. It does not track a pending application, generate a new PAN, correct a name or date of birth, or change a status. External agencies that need verification for others must use the Department's separate authorized process rather than the personal pre-login flow.

  2. 02

Open Verify PAN Status from the official e-Filing portal

Go directly to the Income Tax Department's e-Filing portal and select the pre-login Verify PAN Status service from its Quick Links. The manual says this personal check does not require portal login. Confirm that the browser is on the official incometax.gov.in service before entering information; do not follow a sponsored search link or a message that asks you to send PAN details or an OTP to an agent. If you are using an organization or verification business account, stop and follow the separate external-agency instructions instead.

  3. 03

Enter the requested information yourself on the government page

On the Verify PAN Status page, enter your PAN, full name, date of birth, and a mobile number you can currently access, then continue. The Department's manual requires those fields for the personal flow; it does not require that the mobile number already be registered on the e-Filing portal. Check each entry before continuing, especially the full name and date format, because a mistyped value can prevent a match. Do not paste these details into a Nirmion tool, chat, shared spreadsheet, or support message.

  4. 04

Validate the one-time password within the portal's current limits

Enter the six-digit OTP sent to the mobile number you provided and select Validate on the official page. The current Department FAQ says the OTP is valid for 15 minutes and allows up to three attempts; the live screen controls if these limits change. If it expires or is mistyped, use the portal's resend option and enter only the newest code. Never give the OTP to a caller or another person, and do not ask Nirmion to process or retain it.

  5. 05

Read the result as an information check, not a record update

After successful OTP verification, review the PAN status displayed by the portal. The user manual describes this as an information-only result; the check itself does not change any PAN record or activate a PAN. If the service confirms that the PAN is active and the details match, no correction is needed for this check. If it displays a different status or cannot validate the details, do not infer the cause from a third-party article; use the relevant official PAN service or ask the Department's jurisdictional officer.

  6. 06

Use the official correction or JAO route if the result is unexpected

If your name or date of birth does not match, compare it privately with your PAN record and the source documents, then consult the Department's current individual correction form and instructions. A non-individual PAN has a separate correction route. If the mismatch is unclear or the status needs explanation, use the Department's Know Your JAO service and contact the jurisdictional assessing officer through an official channel. Tax Document Checklist (846) can hold generic follow-up actions only, such as 'review current correction instructions'; do not enter your PAN, the mismatch, status, or documents.

  7. 07

Keep the result private and use a separate service for other needs

Treat the PAN and any displayed identity or status result as personal information. Do not upload screenshots or an e-PAN to Nirmion, post them publicly, or place PAN details in a general checklist. If your real goal is to retrieve an existing e-PAN, reprint a lost physical card, link Aadhaar, or track a recent application, use that separate official workflow instead of repeating Verify PAN Status. Close the session on a shared device and keep only the minimum private record you need for your own follow-up.
