Travel · THE NO-PANIC PLAN
Check U.S. flight baggage allowances and restricted items
A bag can fit the airline allowance and still contain an item that cannot pass TSA screening or fly under FAA dangerous-goods rules. Use this checklist for U.S.-departing air travel; carrier rules can differ by route, fare, status, aircraft, and operating airline, and rules outside the United States may differ. The linked planner organizes measurements and costs you enter; verify every limit on the carrier and government source pages before packing.
MISSION Before packing for a flight departing the United States, verify the operating carrier?s current size, weight, fee, and piece limits and separately screen carry-on and checked items against current TSA security and FAA dangerous-goods rules.

What happens outside this browser tab?
Collect the exact itinerary and operating carriers; check the ticket?s included baggage and the airline?s size, weight, piece, and fee rules; measure each bag including wheels and handles; classify each item as carry-on, checked, or leave behind using TSA screening guidance and FAA PackSafe dangerous-goods rules; handle batteries and special items separately; resolve any uncertainty with the airline or relevant authority before travel; and save a dated check for each flight segment, then recheck after itinerary or policy changes.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
List every flight segment and the operating carrier
Use the ticket confirmation to record each flight date, flight number, operating airline, fare or cabin, passenger, and connection. On codeshare or multi-airline trips, identify who actually operates each segment and check each carrier?s baggage terms; do not assume the marketing airline?s allowance applies throughout. Note loyalty status, credit-card benefits, infant equipment, or mobility-device arrangements only when the carrier confirms they apply to this booking. Keep the booking reference private and use only the minimum information needed for the check.

Confirm the allowance and fees for this exact ticket
Open the operating airline?s current baggage page and the passenger-specific baggage information in the booking or e-ticket. Record the allowed number of carry-on and checked pieces, each bag?s maximum dimensions and weight, included fee or charge, and any fare, route, status, or payment-card conditions. Check whether a personal item has a separate size limit and whether overhead-bin space is guaranteed. The U.S. Department of Transportation explains that airlines disclose baggage allowances and applicable fees; the airline?s current itinerary-specific terms control your booking.
- 03
Measure each bag using the carrier?s stated method
Measure the packed carry-on, personal item, and checked bag against the carrier?s stated dimensions, following its instructions for handles, wheels, pockets, and protrusions. Weigh the packed bags with a reliable scale and leave room for measurement variation. Enter your own measurements and limits in the Baggage Allowance Planner to compare them and estimate any fee you supply; it does not retrieve live carrier rules or decide whether staff will accept a bag. If a bag is over a limit, repack or obtain written carrier guidance before arriving at the airport.
- 04
Check checkpoint restrictions separately from airline baggage limits
For each unusual, liquid, sharp, medical, food, or child-care item, consult TSA?s current ?What Can I Bring?? entry and follow its carry-on or checked-bag instructions. TSA checkpoint screening and airline size or fee rules are different checks: an item that passes security may still violate a carrier rule, and a bag allowed by the airline may still need screening changes. Where TSA says to check with the airline or an officer makes a screening determination, follow that instruction rather than inferring permission from a general packing list.
- 05
Screen dangerous goods and battery-powered items with FAA PackSafe
Check the FAA PackSafe chart for aerosols, fuels, tools, sporting goods, and other regulated items, then verify batteries and power banks on the FAA airline-passenger battery guidance. Spare lithium batteries and power banks generally belong in carry-on baggage under the FAA?s limits; damaged or recalled batteries can be prohibited. Battery capacity, device type, and airline approval can change the answer. If a carry-on is gate-checked, keep spare batteries and power banks with you as FAA guidance directs. If the item is not listed or the rule is unclear, do not pack it until the FAA or carrier resolves the question.
- 06
Resolve special-item and connection questions before travel
Contact the operating airline before packing mobility devices, medical equipment, smart bags with non-removable batteries, sports equipment, musical instruments, or an item whose battery rating is unclear. Ask about approval, packaging, advance notice, cabin or hold placement, and connections on other carriers; save the response and any instructions. For international segments, check the applicable destination and transit security and aviation rules too. Do not rely on a domestic U.S. summary to establish permission abroad, and do not place prescription or essential medical items in checked baggage without a safe contingency plan.
- 07
Save a dated decision and recheck after any change
Make a compact record for each segment with the checked date, carrier policy link, allowance, fee, bag measurements, item decisions, and any airline approval reference. Keep the official TSA and FAA pages available in case you need to review the rule while repacking, but follow current airport and carrier instructions if they have changed. Recheck after a ticket, fare, aircraft, operating carrier, or itinerary change and shortly before departure because fees and policies can be updated. If a conflict remains, ask the carrier or authority directly and leave the uncertain item behind until you have a clear answer.
