Check an India credit card late payment charge
For India-issued credit cards from banks and NBFCs. Compare a statement?s late payment charge with the due date, the amount still outstanding after credits, and the issuer?s disclosed fee method. This guide helps organize a check; it cannot determine a specific legal liability or replace the issuer?s account records.
MISSION Check an India-issued credit card late payment charge against the RBI threshold, the issuer statement and card terms; prepare a documented question for the issuer if the amount appears inconsistent.

Gather the statement and card terms, verify the overdue threshold and chargeable balance against RBI directions, compare the disclosed fee with the amount posted, then raise a written issuer query or use the RBI complaint route when eligible.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Gather the statement and issuer terms
Use the statement that shows the charge. Record the statement period, payment due date, amount due, late payment charge, and the issuer?s disclosed fee method from its current card terms or Most Important Terms and Conditions (MITC). Keep a copy of posted payments, refunds and reversed transactions. Do not enter or share your full card number, CVV, PIN, OTP, login details or unmasked statement in a public workflow.
- 02
Check whether the account crossed the RBI threshold
Count from the payment due date shown on the statement. RBI permits late payment charges only when the credit card account remains past due for more than three days. Use the issuer?s statement and current terms to identify the applicable charge method; the RBI rule does not set one universal fee amount for every card.
- 03
Reconcile the amount the charge is based on
Compare the charge with the outstanding amount after the due date, adjusting for payments, refunds and reversed transactions when credited. RBI says late payment fees and related delay charges are applied to that outstanding amount, not the total amount due. Keep the issuer?s displayed calculation and your own figures side by side; do not assume a mismatch proves an error.
- 04
Audit the statement figures
Use Nirmion?s Credit Card Interest and Fee Audit to compare a reported fee with an expected amount taken from your issuer?s terms or disclosure. Enter only the fee amounts and a non-identifying note; do not upload statements or personal card details. The tool checks your inputs and does not read your account, set RBI rules, or decide whether the issuer acted lawfully.
- 05
Ask the issuer and track the outcome
If the threshold or amount still looks inconsistent, contact the issuer through the number or grievance route printed on its official statement or website. Include the masked account reference, due date, charge, calculation and proof of credited payments, and request a written explanation. Save the complaint reference and response. RBI?s FAQ says you may approach the RBI Ombudsman if the issuer rejects the complaint, you are dissatisfied with its response, or it does not respond within 30 days. Record the RBI CMS docket if you escalate; close the check only after noting the outcome.
