Calculate and compare marketplace selling fees before pricing
A marketplace's headline commission is only one line in the cost stack. Listing charges, payment processing, fulfillment, storage, ads, plan fees, refunds and seller location can all change the amount left from an order. This workflow builds a comparable per-order estimate from official account-specific rates; the Nirmion calculators do arithmetic on the figures you enter and cannot fetch current marketplace fees or promise profit.
MISSION Estimate the platform and order-related selling costs for a defined product scenario, compare like-for-like marketplace options, and validate the result against each seller account's current fee schedule.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Set a precise marketplace, seller-location and product scenario
Choose the marketplace site and currency (for example, Amazon.com or eBay.com), seller country, account/plan type, product category, fulfillment method, item price, quantity, buyer-paid shipping, discount, tax treatment and expected monthly sales volume. Use the same assumptions for every marketplace in the comparison. Record whether this is a one-off listing or a recurring volume, and include any relevant product dimensions/weight for fulfillment estimates. A fee rate can vary by category, account status, country, sale amount, plan and service, so a generic 'marketplace percentage' is not a dependable input. Leave a field marked unknown instead of inventing a rate. Do not enter private account credentials, customer identities or transaction IDs into Nirmion tools.
- 02
Collect each platform's current official fee rules and account rates
For Amazon, identify the selling-plan charge, category referral fee, minimums and the fulfillment/storage costs for the chosen method; Amazon's pricing page links its Revenue Calculator to compare FBA with seller fulfillment. For eBay, check the fee page for the exact site, category, store tier, insertion allowance, final value fee, per-order charge and any optional upgrades or performance adjustments. For Etsy, check listing/renewal, transaction, country-specific payment processing, advertising, currency and any location-specific operating fees. For Shopify, determine the plan, payment provider and current third-party transaction/processing fees for the store's location. Save the page date and source URL next to each input because marketplaces update schedules; do not copy a rate from an old blog or another seller's account.
- 03
Separate per-order costs from subscriptions, fulfillment and taxes
Build a cost sheet with one row per charge and mark whether it applies per listing, sold unit, order, percentage of sale, shipment, storage period or month. Keep marketplace commission separate from payment processing, pick/pack/postage, return/refund effects, optional ads, subscription charges and tax on platform fees. Allocate a monthly plan fee across the expected paid orders only for a planning scenario, then show the unallocated monthly amount too; low sales volume can make the effective per-order cost much higher. Separate tax collected/remitted by a marketplace from taxes or duties that are your own responsibility. Do not count buyer sales tax as profit or subtract the same shipping cost twice. This classification prevents a single percentage from hiding the real cost.
- 04
Calculate the order estimate and compare scenarios transparently
Enter the verified input values into the Marketplace Fee Calculator (tool 566) to estimate the selected scenario. Keep the inputs, source date, included charges, omitted costs and currency visible beside the output. Use the Marketplace Fee Comparison (tool 12137) to place the same product/order assumptions side by side across channels. Compare estimated platform charges, fulfillment/postage, allocated plan/ad costs, refund sensitivity and contribution before product cost; then subtract landed product cost and other variable operating expenses in your own margin analysis. These tools calculate from the supplied numbers: they do not import fee tables, select the correct category, include every seller-specific exception or determine taxes.
- 05
Validate against official fee calculators and actual seller statements
Before changing a listing price or moving inventory, run the same dimensions, weight, category, price and fulfillment method through Amazon's Revenue Calculator where relevant, then compare the result to the fee preview in your seller account. For eBay, Etsy and Shopify, confirm current account-specific rates and reconcile one comparable completed order against the platform's fee/settlement breakdown. Investigate differences such as category changes, extra quantities, ad attribution, returns, taxes on fees, currency conversion, plan allocation or shipping labels. Keep a dated record and rerun the estimate when the platform, site, seller location, plan, product, fulfillment method or fee schedule changes. A comparison is a decision aid, not a guaranteed payout or accounting/tax result.
