Build and verify an Amazon apparel size chart

An apparel size chart can reduce uncertainty only when its measurements, size labels, units, and product type match the item a customer is buying. Amazon's size-chart process uses marketplace and product-specific templates, and its guidance distinguishes local selectable sizes from manufacturer labels and calls for relevant body measurements. This workflow prepares and reviews source data before using the Seller Central self-serve tool. Nirmion's Size Chart Generator can organize supplied measurements into a draft chart; it does not measure clothing, infer a fit standard, validate Amazon's template, upload a chart, or certify sizing. Size conventions differ by market and product type, so never copy a generic conversion table as if it applied to every brand.

MISSION Prepare an accurate, product-specific apparel size chart for an Amazon listing from approved measurements, use the matching Seller Central template, and verify the published customer-facing chart.

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Select the Amazon marketplace, product type, and ASIN; confirm chart permissions and template; collect approved product-specific measurements; distinguish the customer-selected local size from any manufacturer label; keep units and measurement types clear; format the reviewed rows with a chart tool if helpful; upload only into Amazon's matching template; resolve preview errors; publish and verify the customer-facing result.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Identify the exact marketplace, product type, ASIN, and chart owner

Record the marketplace storefront, product department and type, target ASIN or ASIN group, and the person who owns the source measurements. Open Seller Central and confirm that the account has permission to manage size charts; Amazon's self-serve workflow can require size-chart permissions. Use the ASIN and product type to select the appropriate template rather than starting from a generic chart image. Check that the item is actually apparel, shoes, sport, or outdoor in a supported store for the tool you plan to use. If the intended store or category is not supported, follow Amazon's current Seller Support path instead of uploading a mismatched template. (Sources 1, 2)

  2. 02

Collect approved measurements for this product and size run

Use the brand's approved technical specification, fit sample record, or measurement sheet as the source of truth. Confirm which sizes were measured, who checked them, when the sample was measured, and whether the values represent body measurements or garment dimensions; label that distinction in working records. Do not fill gaps by extrapolating from another brand or assuming that a size label has the same fit across manufacturers. Select measurements relevant to this product type: Amazon's guidance gives different examples for bottoms and dresses and expects fields to match the product. Keep any manufacturing tolerance or fit note separate from the base measurement unless the chart template explicitly provides a suitable field. (Sources 2, 3)

  3. 03

Align local customer sizes, label sizes, and measurement units

Identify the size the shopper will choose in the target marketplace, then record the manufacturer's label size separately if it differs. Amazon describes local size as the key customer-selected value and warns that some regional size systems do not have a universal conversion. Match local sizes to the size selector already used on the listing and product label; do not invent a US/EU/UK conversion from a simple arithmetic rule. Use the units required by the marketplace template and keep each measurement system internally consistent. ASTM's body-measurement standards are population- and garment-scope-specific; consult the applicable current standard or brand fit authority when establishing a sizing baseline rather than treating one example as universal. (Sources 2, 3, 4)

  4. 04

Build a row-by-row chart and check for missing or conflicting values

Create one row for each size customers can select and one column for each required measurement in the Amazon template. Check that the row count matches the available size run, every numeric value has an explicit unit, measurement ranges ascend, and adjacent sizes follow the approved brand specification. Flag missing or unusual values for a measurement owner to confirm; do not silently interpolate, average, or convert values in a way that changes the source. Where a size label has both a local customer size and a manufacturer's label size, preserve both in the appropriate fields. If you use Nirmion's Size Chart Generator, enter only the reviewed data and compare its output with this source table before using it. (Sources 1, 2)

  5. 05

Download and preserve the Seller Central template for the exact listing

In Amazon Seller Central's size chart self-serve tool, select the target store and search for the ASIN or the correct product type to download the matching template. Compare its prefilled values with the reviewed source table and correct them only from an approved measurement record. Amazon notes that templates are country-specific, units may be localized or converted for display, and changing or deleting required rows and columns can prevent upload. Keep the downloaded original unchanged and work in a separate copy without altering the template structure. The Nirmion chart is a planning aid only; it does not replace Amazon's required file, field names, permissions, or template validation. (Sources 1, 2)

  6. 06

Upload the completed template and resolve every preview issue

Upload the completed marketplace template to the intended ASIN or product group in Seller Central and review all mandatory errors and optional suggestions. Fix missing measurements, incorrect measurement types, wrong units, out-of-order ranges, duplicated sizes, or product-type mismatches using the source records; do not accept an automated normalization that conflicts with the approved data. Preview the actual chart and check its title, size rows, units, column order, and any hidden empty fields. Confirm all ASINs in a bulk submission match the marketplace, department, product type, and size-chart scope. If a preview still looks wrong, stop and correct the file before publishing. (Sources 1, 2)

  7. 07

Publish and verify the customer-facing chart for the right item

Publish only after the preview matches the approved measurements and the correct ASIN. Record the chart version, measurement source, marketplace, ASINs, reviewer, and publication time so future product or fit changes trigger another review. Reopen the listing after Amazon's stated processing window and confirm the size chart appears on the customer detail page, the visible local size matches the size selector, and units and measurement labels remain clear. If the chart is missing or mapped to the wrong item, use Seller Central's report or support path and avoid telling customers it is live until it can be seen. A correct chart describes supplied sizing information; it does not guarantee a particular customer's fit or eliminate product returns. (Sources 1, 2)
