Register as a new voter in India using Form 6

This guide is for an Indian citizen applying as a new general elector in the constituency where they ordinarily reside. First check the electoral roll: Form 6 is not the right route for an overseas elector or someone already registered who needs a correction or move. Current qualifying dates, revision drives, evidence rules and the live submission steps can change, so use the Election Commission of India's current portal and Form 6 instructions as the authority. Nirmion's checklist can organize reminders only; never enter Aadhaar, identity-document numbers, a full address, application reference, or document images into it.

MISSION Apply to be added to India's electoral roll as a first-time general elector using the Election Commission of India's Form 6 process, then confirm the application outcome.

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Check eligibility and existing enrollment; gather current age, ordinary-residence and identity details using the live Form 6 instructions; organize a non-sensitive preparation checklist; submit Form 6 through an official ECI route; then track the acknowledgement and verify that your name appears in the electoral roll.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Confirm that Form 6 is the right application

Search the Election Commission of India's electoral roll before starting. Form 6 is for a new general elector; do not file a second registration just because you do not have a physical EPIC card. If your name already appears, use the current Form 8 route for a permitted correction, shift of residence, replacement EPIC or other listed service. Overseas electors have a separate Form 6A path and eligibility rules. For a general elector, confirm that you are an Indian citizen, ordinarily resident in the constituency where you are applying, not disqualified from enrollment, and will be at least 18 on one of the qualifying dates used for the applicable roll revision. ECI currently lists 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October as qualifying dates; election schedules, special intensive revisions and state-level publication dates can affect when a claim is processed. Check the live ECI FAQ and state Chief Electoral Officer notices for the current cycle. If you are unsure whether a previous registration exists, resolve that with the ERO/BLO before submitting a declaration that this is your first enrollment.

  2. 02

Check the live Form 6 evidence list and prepare a private checklist

Open the current Form 6 and its filling instructions from the Election Commission's official site before collecting anything; a portal's current instructions take priority if a form version changes. The current form asks for personal details, a recent photograph, age evidence and proof of present ordinary residence. Its listed age evidence includes a birth certificate, Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence, qualifying Class X/XII certificate or Indian passport containing date of birth; it allows another age document to be specified when none of these is available, with personal verification described in the guidance. The residence list includes specified utility bills, Aadhaar, a current bank/post-office passbook, Indian passport, land records, registered rent lease or registered sale deed, and permits another document to be specified. Follow the form's self-attestation directions and check whose name can appear on the address proof. Students may be enrolled at a parent's home or the hostel/mess where they ordinarily reside; the instructions also describe field verification for certain applicants without standard proof. Use Government Form Checklist only to note non-sensitive reminders such as 'age proof selected', 'residence proof checked against current form', and 'photo ready'. It is a browser-local organizer, not an eligibility decision or an ECI-approved list. Do not put document numbers, Aadhaar, complete address, scans, OTPs or application identifiers in it.

  3. 03

Complete the current Form 6 carefully

Use the Election Commission's Voters' Services Portal or its official Voter Helpline App, and select the new-voter Form 6 service. The official FAQ also describes paper submission to the ERO/AERO, by post to that officer, or through the Booth Level Officer for the applicant's polling area; verify what is accepted in the current revision before relying on an offline route. Address the claim to the constituency where you are ordinarily resident. Enter your name accurately in English and the state's official language where the form requests both: ECI's guidance warns that automatic transliteration can introduce spelling errors. Match the date of birth, relative details and residence period to your records. The Form 6 permits an applicant who does not have an Aadhaar number to indicate that; Aadhaar is not a reason to invent or borrow a number. Review the citizenship, ordinary-residence and first-enrollment declarations line by line. Do not guess, claim residence that is not ordinary residence, or submit false information; ECI warns that a false declaration is punishable. If a field does not fit your circumstances, ask the ERO/BLO rather than changing a standard answer to force submission.

  4. 04

Submit through ECI and preserve the acknowledgement privately

Before final submission, compare every name, date, constituency, address and selected evidence with the current form instructions, and check that the attached image and document copies meet the portal's present requirements. Submit only through voters.eci.gov.in, the official Voter Helpline App, or an ECI-designated offline channel; avoid paid intermediaries and look-alike sites. Save the displayed acknowledgement or reference number in a private password-protected place, not in the Nirmion checklist or a public/shared notes document. The acknowledgement is the handle for status checks, not proof that your name is already included in the roll. If the portal rejects a file or reports a mismatch, note the exact official message and correct the source record or ask the ERO/BLO how to proceed; do not repeatedly submit duplicate forms. For an offline filing, retain the receipt or obtain the acknowledgement number and receiving officer details. Never share an OTP, full identity number, account password or unredacted application screenshot with anyone claiming they can speed up enrollment.

  5. 05

Track the case and verify the electoral-roll result

Use the ECI portal's current application-status service with the acknowledgement number and follow any request for field verification, hearing, clarification or additional evidence from the responsible ERO/AERO/BLO. Keep copies of what you submitted and record dates of official contact, but share documents only through an authenticated ECI channel or with the designated officer. Do not assume a successful form submission, an SMS, or delivery of an EPIC card alone proves that your entry is correct. Check the published electoral roll for your name, constituency and polling-part details after the authority processes the claim; timelines depend on the roll revision and local processing, so use the portal's current status and official notices rather than a promised number of days. If the claim is rejected or the roll shows an error, read the reason and follow the current ECI remedy or appeal instructions, or contact the ERO through the official directory. Treat the task as complete only when the official record confirms your enrollment and the details match. Keep the acknowledgement and identity records private, and remove any temporary copies from shared devices.
