Apply for a Japan tourist eVISA from India through VFS
For eligible ordinary-passport holders residing in India, Japan?s eVISA for short-term tourism is submitted through the accredited application-centre route identified by the Japanese mission, with an electronic visa issued if approved. This guide sends applicants to the right official jurisdiction, distinguishes tourism from other purposes, and explains secure document preparation, submission and the required mobile visa notice.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Confirm the Japan visa category and India route fit your trip
This workflow is limited to a short-term tourism trip to Japan by an ordinary-passport holder residing in India who needs a visa. First check the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) visa-exemption list for the traveler?s nationality and the current JAPAN eVISA eligibility. MOFA lists India residents under application through an accredited agency; the Embassy of Japan in India directs applicants to submit through its VFS Visa Application Centre route. Japan eVISA is a single-entry short-term tourism category, generally up to 90 days. Visiting relatives, business, study, work, transit, long stays, diplomatic/official passports and other non-tourism cases require different instructions.
- 02
Find the correct Japanese mission and current VFS instructions
Use the Embassy/Consulate of Japan in India?s current Visa page to identify the mission/centre responsible for the applicant?s place of residence and open its linked VFS route. Confirm the currently accepted application method, document checklist, application window, appointment/attendance rules, service charge and visa fee on those official pages immediately before filing. The Japanese government warns about lookalike/fraud visa sites; start from an Embassy or MOFA page and do not pay anyone who calls or emails claiming they can verify documents or expedite a decision. Do not rely on an old blog, saved checklist or a different consular jurisdiction.
- 03
Organize the current tourism evidence without exposing private records
Read the latest checklist for the correct Indian consular jurisdiction and visa category. Use Government Form Checklist to record document categories and who will obtain each item, but do not enter passport numbers, bank balances, addresses or upload scans to Nirmion. Prepare only the evidence the official checklist asks for, which may include the current application form/photo, travel itinerary and financial or employment supporting records depending on the case. Ensure names and travel dates match across records; do not invent bookings or alter financial statements. Missing, incorrect or inconsistent documents can delay or cancel examination.
- 04
Submit through the authorized centre and keep the receipt
Submit the completed application and supporting records using the VFS process linked from the Embassy?s Visa page, following the current centre, jurisdiction and payment instructions. Keep the VFS acknowledgement/reference, receipt and submitted-document list. Pay only the current visa fee and VFS service charge shown on official pages; avoid unofficial agents and any request to pay to expedite the case. The Embassy says processing time can vary and applications cannot be prioritized to match a traveler?s schedule, so apply within the official window and leave adequate time. A receipt proves submission only; it is not approval or permission to travel.
- 05
Track the decision and prepare to display an issued eVISA correctly
Use the official VFS reference or Embassy-linked status instructions to monitor the application and respond to any request through the same verified channel. Do not buy non-refundable travel on the assumption that a pending application will be granted. If the eVISA is issued, follow MOFA/Embassy instructions for opening the ?visa issuance notice? on a mobile device at airport check-in; the Japan mission in India says internet access is required and a PDF, photo, screenshot or printed copy is not accepted as the display method. Check passport and itinerary details against the notice and confirm all current airline/immigration instructions before departure.
