Government & Identity · THE NO-PANIC PLAN

Apply for Instant e-PAN in India

This workflow covers India's free Instant e-PAN service for eligible individuals who have not already been allotted a PAN. It produces a digitally signed PAN in electronic form through the Income Tax Department's e-Filing portal. The process uses Aadhaar, its linked mobile number and DigiLocker; complete those identity and consent steps only on the official government services. This guide does not cover a physical-card-only request, correction to an existing PAN, or a lost PAN.

MISSION Help an eligible first-time individual request an Indian digital PAN through the official Instant e-PAN service, keep the acknowledgement, track the request and download the allotment.

Check eligibility on the official portal

THE REAL-WORLD BIT

What happens outside this browser tab?

Check Instant e-PAN eligibility and prerequisites; open the Income Tax e-Filing portal's pre-login Instant e-PAN service; enter Aadhaar and complete the consent, linked-mobile OTP and DigiLocker document steps; save the acknowledgement number; then check status on the official portal and view or download the e-PAN once it is allotted.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Confirm you qualify for Instant e-PAN

Use this route only if you are an individual who has not already been allotted a PAN, are not a minor on the request date, are not a representative assessee covered by the portal's exclusion, have valid Aadhaar linked to an active mobile number, and can access DigiLocker. If you already have a PAN but cannot find the number or card, do not request a second PAN through this service; use the Income Tax Department's existing-PAN or replacement guidance. If you cannot meet the Instant e-PAN prerequisites, use the regular PAN application path instead. The Income Tax Department currently describes this pre-login service as free and provides a digitally signed electronic PAN.

  2. 02

    Open the official pre-login application

Go to the Income Tax Department's e-Filing portal yourself, open Quick Links, choose Instant e-PAN, then choose Get New e-PAN. Check that you are on the official incometax.gov.in/eportal service before entering identity details. Enter your Aadhaar number and follow the portal's eligibility and consent prompts. If the portal reports that Aadhaar is already linked to a valid PAN, stop this new-PAN application and follow the existing-PAN service instead.

  3. 03

Complete Aadhaar consent and the DigiLocker document step

Read and accept the portal's Aadhaar e-KYC consent, then enter the OTP sent to the mobile number linked to Aadhaar. Review and confirm the Aadhaar details. When redirected to DigiLocker, retrieve an accepted proof-of-date-of-birth document that is available from its issuing authority or supported upload flow, choose the document you intend to share with the Income Tax Department, and approve that disclosure in DigiLocker. The portal's current FAQ lists examples such as a driving licence, birth certificate, Class X marksheet or certificate, and CGHS card. Email linking or validation is optional during e-PAN generation according to the current help page. Never send Aadhaar details, OTPs or identity documents to Nirmion or another party claiming it can submit the request for you.

  4. 04

Submit and save the acknowledgement number

Review the declarations and details in the official portal, complete any required fields, and submit the request there. On the success screen, save the acknowledgement number for your own records and check that the confirmation message reaches your Aadhaar-linked mobile. If you do not reach a success screen or cannot retrieve the required date-of-birth document in DigiLocker, do not assume the request was submitted; resolve the portal/DigiLocker issue or switch to the regular PAN application route described by the Income Tax Department.

  5. 05

Track the request and download the allotted e-PAN

Return to the e-Filing portal's Instant e-PAN section and choose Check Status / Download e-PAN. Enter Aadhaar and complete the linked-mobile OTP verification on the official portal. When the request status says a PAN has been generated and allotted, use View e-PAN or Download e-PAN and keep the digitally signed file securely. If it is still pending, use the acknowledgement and official status route again later rather than submitting a duplicate request. This service gives an electronic PAN; a physical-card request or an update to an existing PAN is a separate process and is outside this guide.
