Government & Identity · THE NO-PANIC PLAN
Register a birth and obtain the official certificate in India
India requires birth registration, but the responsible Registrar and digital application route depend on where the birth occurred. The central Civil Registration System is available only for the States/UTs shown on its current portal page. Confirm the local process, report promptly, keep the reference number and obtain the certificate from the official registration unit.
MISSION Report a birth to the correct local Registrar and obtain the official registration certificate.

What happens outside this browser tab?
Find the Registrar for the place of birth; ask the institution or designated informant to report the event promptly; prepare only the evidence the local unit requests; submit through the correct State/UT/local channel; then verify the registration details and obtain the official certificate. Use the delayed-registration or correction process if needed rather than creating a duplicate entry.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Identify the Registrar and jurisdiction where the birth occurred
Birth registration is handled by the Registrar of Births and Deaths for the place of occurrence, through the local registration unit such as the municipal body, panchayat or designated government facility. Start with the hospital/birthing institution if the birth occurred there, or the local Registrar if it occurred at home. Confirm the correct registration unit and state/UT portal before submitting: India?s central Civil Registration System online page lists only the jurisdictions it currently serves, while other areas direct applicants to their state or local system. This is a registration process, not a substitute for medical or citizenship advice.
- 02
Ask the institution or responsible informant to report the event promptly
For an institutional birth, ask the hospital or facility which Registrar it reports births to and how the parent will receive the event reference or registration number. For a home birth or another non-institutional event, contact the local Registrar promptly and ask who the law designates as the informant and what form the state requires. The Registration of Births and Deaths Act assigns reporting duties by event context, and State rules prescribe the operational process. Do not assume the central website accepts every event or that a hospital discharge paper itself is a registered certificate.
- 03
Prepare only the information and supporting proof the local Registrar requests
Use Government Form Checklist to organize the categories requested by the local registration unit, without entering a child?s full personal details or uploading medical/identity papers to Nirmion. Check the Registrar?s official form for the date and place of birth, parent/informant details and institution record or other supporting material required for this event and jurisdiction. Spell names carefully and compare them with the source records before filing. The local government?s current instructions control the accepted evidence; requirements, portal access and name-entry options can differ by State/UT and by institutional versus home birth.
- 04
Submit through the official reporting route and retain the reference
Follow the institution?s reporting process or submit the prescribed notification to the correct Registrar/local portal. Use the national CRS online reporting route only when the event?s State/UT appears in its current supported list; otherwise use the State/UT or local registration channel. Keep the acknowledgement, reference number and contact details of the registration unit. If the birth was not reported within the applicable time period, do not use an ordinary new-birth form to backdate it: contact the Registrar and follow the delayed-registration procedure in the currently applicable Act, State rules and any required order or supporting record.
- 05
Verify registration and obtain the official certificate
Use the registration reference to ask the local Registrar or official portal whether the event has been entered and when the certificate can be obtained. Check that the registration number, date and place of birth, and parent details match the accepted record before relying on the certificate. Download or collect the official certificate only from the government route; preserve the issued copy and its verification details. If the record is missing or contains an error, request correction or a name insertion through the Registrar under the applicable rules. Correction is a separate official process; do not create a second registration or edit a certificate image.
