Vehicles · THE NO-PANIC PLAN
Apply for a Washington, D.C. residential parking permit
For a DC resident seeking a residential parking permit, resident parking permit or DC parking permit, this workflow covers an eligible private vehicle tied to a District address. Confirm the exact block and signs first: living in a ward or permit zone alone does not establish eligibility, and a permit does not waive meters, posted restrictions or other DDOT rules. DMV issues the RPP as a zone designation on the vehicle registration sticker.
MISSION Help a District of Columbia resident determine whether a block and vehicle qualify for an RPP, apply through DC DMV, and verify the registration sticker and parking rules afterward.
Check the DDOT RPP block dataset and your street signs before applyingTHE REAL-WORLD BIT
What happens outside this browser tab?
Check the exact block against DDOT's RPP block dataset and curb signs; verify the vehicle and registration address meet DC DMV eligibility; clear registration prerequisites and prepare the information requested by the official application; request the RPP through registration, renewal, the online RPP portal or a DMV service center; then verify the zone on the issued sticker, display only one current sticker, and follow all other signs and rules.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Check the exact block and whether you need an RPP
Use DDOT's Residential Parking Permit Blocks dataset to check the actual block where the vehicle will be parked, then read the signs on that block. DC DMV says the block must be designated for RPP; a ward or zone name by itself does not grant permission to park beyond the posted two-hour limit. If you use a garage or do not need to park on a restricted residential block, DMV says an RPP may not be needed. Save the block result and a note of the posted restriction. If the dataset and signs appear inconsistent, ask DC DMV/DDOT to confirm before relying on a permit; only DDOT certifies RPP blocks.
- 02
Confirm the vehicle and registered address fit the RPP route
DC DMV issues an RPP to an eligible DC DMV-registered private vehicle (and describes eligible reciprocity vehicles) for the permit area of its registered address. Check that the registration address is your current legal DC mailing address and that it corresponds to the RPP zone for the restricted block. Commercial vehicles, buses, vehicles longer than 22 feet and sightseeing vehicles are ineligible; the RPP page also treats a vehicle with unremovable commercial advertising or insignia as commercial. If the vehicle is not DC-registered, the address is changing, or you need a visitor, rental, new-car, health-care or other special permit, stop and use the separate DC DMV route instead of assuming this resident permit applies.
- 03
Resolve registration prerequisites and prepare the application
For a registration or renewal route, check the vehicle's registration status and inspection, maintain valid DC vehicle insurance, and pay outstanding District debts that block registration. Complete any name or address change before a renewal; DC DMV says online renewal is limited to passenger registrations that have not been expired more than 90 days and requires a valid inspection, DC DMV credential and DC insurance. For the separate new-RPP request portal, have the tag number and last four VIN characters available; the form also asks for contact details and insurance company, policy number and effective dates, then displays vehicle, registration, fee and payment sections. Enter personal, insurance and payment details only on the official DC DMV service; do not put them into Nirmion or this public guide. Check DC DMV's current fee schedule for your household's vehicle tier and any applicable exemption because fees can change.
- 04
Request the RPP through the correct DC DMV transaction
DC DMV provides RPPs as part of vehicle registration or registration renewal, online or at a DC DMV service center. For an eligible new RPP request, use the official DC DMV Residential Parking Permit request portal linked from the RPP page; for a renewal, select the RPP option in the registration renewal flow when it is offered. Before confirming, review the vehicle, registered address/zone, fee and payment details shown by the official service, correct any mismatch, and save the receipt or confirmation. If the online system says the vehicle is not eligible or the registration has a stop, contact DC DMV or visit a service center rather than repeatedly submitting or guessing at another zone. The RPP is not approved just because an application was started or payment attempted.
- 05
Verify the issued zone sticker and keep parking within its limits
When the registration product arrives, check that the RPP zone designation matches the registered address and intended block before relying on it. DC DMV says the RPP number is shown on the vehicle registration windshield sticker; display only one valid zone sticker and remove expired or outdated stickers, since displaying more than one can result in a ticket. An RPP does not excuse meters, temporary restrictions, street-cleaning rules, or other DDOT restrictions. If you move to another RPP zone, change the tag, or replace the windshield, check DMV's replacement/update procedure; when moving, DMV says to change the registration address first. Keep the confirmation and note the renewal or follow-up date. Finish when the issued zone and current block signs agree, or when DMV/DDOT has clarified the discrepancy.
