Add or update a nominee for an Indian fixed deposit

A practical guide to an Indian bank fixed-deposit nomination under the Banking Companies (Nomination) Rules, 2025. The rules allow up to four individual nominees for deposits, either with shares totaling 100% or in a successive priority order. Each bank controls its own accepted submission channels and exact customer steps. This guide does not determine inheritance rights or replace legal advice.

MISSION Register or change a nomination for a specific Indian bank fixed deposit, choose simultaneous shares or successive priority, submit through the bank, and verify acknowledgement and registration.

YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES

One step at a time.

Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.

  1. 01

Identify the exact deposit and who must act

Use the bank's official app/site, statement, deposit advice, or branch to find the current nomination recorded for this fixed deposit. Note the bank, branch, depositor names, customer/account reference, and the fixed-deposit receipt or distinguishing number the bank uses. For a joint deposit, the depositors must make a nomination together; for an update or cancellation, all depositors must act together. These Indian rules cover deposits held in individual capacity, not a deposit held in a representative or office-holder capacity. If the deposit is in a minor's name, the person legally entitled to act for the minor must sign. If the record is unclear, pause and ask the bank to identify the correct deposit and current entry before filing.

  2. 02

    Choose one nomination arrangement

Under India's Banking Companies (Nomination) Rules, 2025, effective 1 November 2025, a deposit can name up to four individuals either simultaneously or successively. For simultaneous nominees, choose each share so the percentages total exactly 100%. For successive nominees, set a clear first-to-fourth priority; a later nominee becomes effective only after all higher-priority nominees have died. Use only one of the bank form's share or priority fields. Do not mix the two arrangements. Decide this with the depositors before filling the form; a nomination is not a substitute for a will or advice about inheritance rights.

  3. 03

Get the bank's current deposit nomination form

Download the nomination, cancellation, or variation form from the bank's official website or obtain it from the branch, or use authenticated e-nomination if that bank offers it. Check that it is for bank deposits and reflects the Banking Companies (Nomination) Rules, 2025; do not copy an old one-nominee DA-1 template without the bank's confirmation. The prescribed form asks for bank/branch and deposit details and nominee particulars such as name, address, age, relationship and contact details where applicable. It includes guardian details if a nominee is a minor. Follow the actual bank form for any additional required fields; Aadhaar is not listed as a universal requirement in the prescribed Gazette form.

  4. 04

Complete, authenticate, and submit through the bank

Enter the exact deposit reference and each nominee's details as the bank requests. Fill either the successive priority field or the simultaneous percentage field; check the totals and order again. For a minor nominee, complete the guardian section. Have every depositor sign or complete the bank's supported authenticated e-nomination flow. For an e-nomination, use only the bank's official app or site and complete its authentication; if the bank does not offer it, submit the prescribed form using the branch or other channel that bank accepts. Do not send account or identity details through a public checklist or unverified contact. A later nomination may replace or vary the previous one, so verify the change selected on the form before signing.

  5. 05

Get the acknowledgement and verify registration

Ask for the bank's written or electronic acknowledgement and retain its date and reference number. Check that the bank has registered the nomination against the intended fixed deposit, not just a different linked account; if the bank cannot show the record, follow up with its official branch or service channel and keep the change unresolved. The 2025 Rules require the bank to acknowledge filing and register the form or e-nomination. A nomination does not cease solely because the deposit is renewed. If you want the same nomination on another account, ask the bank to extend it and confirm acceptance; the rules treat an accepted extension as a separate nomination for that account.
