Activate an Existing Indian UAN Through UMANG Face Authentication
EPFO's member portal says activation of an existing UAN through the web portal has been discontinued. It now directs members to UMANG's EPFO Services and the “UAN Activation” option under “UAN Services Through Face Auth.” This guide is only for an existing UAN that has not been activated; it does not cover generating a new UAN, correcting profile data, or linking Aadhaar to an EPF account. Keep your Aadhaar, UAN, OTP, face-authentication session, password, and screenshots out of Nirmion. The current UMANG/EPFO screens govern the exact prompts; stop if your case or the app's instructions differ.
MISSION Help an Indian EPF member activate an existing, inactive UAN through the current official UMANG and Aadhaar face-authentication route, then verify access and handle exceptions safely.
Open the official EPFO Member Portal and follow its current UMANG activation instructionsTHE REAL-WORLD BIT
What happens outside this browser tab?
Confirm you have an existing inactive UAN; prepare the official UMANG app, Aadhaar-linked mobile access, and any face-authentication component the official flow requires; open EPFO's UAN Activation service; provide consent and complete only the requested OTP and face checks inside the government app; verify activation by signing in through EPFO; and use EPFO help or the employer for mismatches without creating a duplicate UAN or sharing credentials.
YOUR CHECKLIST, WITH FEWER DRAMATIC SIGHES
One step at a time.
Follow the order below. If a step names a Nirmion tool, its link is right there with it.
- 01
Confirm this is an existing, inactive UAN
Use this route only if EPFO has already allotted you a UAN and you need to activate it. If you do not know the number, first use EPFO's current Know Your UAN option or ask your employer's verified payroll contact; do not start a new-UAN flow merely because you cannot find the number. EPFO treats new UAN allotment, activation of an existing UAN, and face authentication of an already activated UAN as separate services. The member portal currently says existing UAN activation is available through UMANG, while its old web activation facility is discontinued. If EPFO says your UAN is already active, or you have more than one UAN, stop and resolve that status with EPFO/employer rather than repeating activation or creating another number.
- 02
Prepare your phone and keep identity details private
Install or update UMANG only from the official app store listing reached through the Government of India's UMANG site. Keep your Aadhaar-linked mobile phone available for any OTP prompt. EPFO's user manual lists Aadhaar, access to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number, and the Aadhaar Face RD component among the common requirements for its face-authentication services; install that component only if the official UMANG flow requests it, and only from the official store route. Government Form Checklist (845) can hold a simple readiness checklist, but leave every field generic: do not enter an Aadhaar or UAN number, mobile number, OTP, password, personal detail, biometric data, or image. The tool neither communicates with EPFO nor verifies your readiness.
- 03
Open the current EPFO activation service in UMANG
Launch UMANG yourself, choose EPFO Services, then locate “UAN Services Through Face Auth” and select “UAN Activation.” The EPFO member portal currently publishes these exact directions for existing UANs and separately labels “UAN Allotment and Activation” for generation of a new number. Do not use a search-ad link, message link, agent's phone, or an old saved bookmark for the discontinued web activation route. If the service label is missing or the app's instructions have changed, return to the live EPFO member portal to confirm the route before entering data; do not substitute a similarly named service without checking its stated purpose.
- 04
Review the consent and complete only the official prompts
Read the purpose and consent text shown inside UMANG before proceeding. Enter an identifier only in the official app when its current UAN Activation screen requests it, and check every digit yourself before submission. Follow the app's live instructions for any Aadhaar-linked mobile OTP and face-authentication step; do not assume the new-UAN sequence is identical to existing-UAN activation. Keep the phone steady and use the camera conditions the official prompt specifies. Never tell an OTP, UAN password, or Aadhaar details to a caller or helper, and do not share a screen while authentication is in progress. If the name/details shown do not match or the consent/verification request seems unexpected, cancel and contact EPFO through its published support route.
- 05
Wait for the result and verify access at EPFO
Let UMANG finish and read the final status before closing the app. Save only a minimal confirmation reference in a private place if one is provided; do not capture or upload Aadhaar screens, OTPs, face images, or credentials. Then open the EPFO Member Portal by navigating from epfindia.gov.in yourself and try signing in with your UAN and the password you control. The member portal is the source of truth for whether the account is accessible; an app progress indicator or SMS alone is not proof that a later service such as passbook or claims will work. If authentication reports success but EPFO still shows the UAN as inactive, avoid repeated attempts and use EPFO support to reconcile the status.
- 06
Handle mismatches and failed attempts through official support
If you cannot receive the OTP, Aadhaar details do not match, the app says the UAN is already active/linked, face verification repeatedly fails, or activation and portal status disagree, stop rather than trying a different person's phone or making a new UAN. Note the error wording and date without recording secrets. Contact EPFO using the current helpdesk number shown on its member portal (currently 14470) or raise the issue through an official EPFO channel; ask your employer's payroll team to check employment-side records through a verified company contact when needed. Do not pay an agent, install an APK sent in chat, or send identity documents to an unsolicited account. The exact remedy depends on the record and error, so this guide does not promise that an app retry or profile correction will fix it.
- 07
Secure your account after activation
Once you have confirmed sign-in, use a unique password that you keep private and follow EPFO's current account-security prompts. Store UAN and activation records in your own protected records, not in Nirmion, a public checklist, shared notes, or an unverified cloud folder. EPFO warns members that it does not request Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, passwords, OTPs, or money over calls or messages. If you receive a request to pay for activation or disclose a code, do not respond; verify through the member portal or official EPFO helpdesk. For a next task such as viewing contributions, use the separate EPF passbook workflow and its official source links rather than treating successful activation as evidence that contribution records are correct.
