EDUCATION DECISION WORKBENCH

Percentile Rank Grade Calculator

Calculate midrank or strictly-below percentile from an anonymous score list with visible below and tie counts.

Runs in this browser tabEditable downloadUp to 500 structured rows and 30,000 characters per field. Use anonymous or fictional labels.

Learning inputs

Build the percentile rank grade calculator

Enter an anonymous assessment label, target score, one numeric score per line, and the percentile definition. Use an authorized comparison set and follow small-group reporting rules.

Generation uses only the information entered in this tab. It does not fetch sources or make student decisions.

Transparent method

How the percentile rank grade calculator works

Midrank percentile = (count below + 0.5 × count equal) ÷ n × 100. Strictly-below percentile = count below ÷ n × 100. The result describes only the supplied comparison group. It does not establish a grade, norm, growth score, proficiency classification, or broader population position.

  1. 01
    Before generation

Confirm the comparison set and percentile definition.

  2. 02
    During review

    Inspect below and tie counts.

  3. 03
    Before use

Label the method and group whenever reporting the result.

How to interpret the result

Percentile Rank Grade Calculator

Before generation

Use this when the exact position of a score within a supplied group is needed and the treatment of ties must be explicit.

Worked example

In 13 fictional scores, two values equal 82 and seven are below. Midrank counts seven plus half of the two ties, giving 8 ÷ 13 × 100.

Formula or methodology

Midrank percentile = (count below + 0.5 × count equal) ÷ n × 100. Strictly-below percentile = count below ÷ n × 100.

How to interpret the result

The result describes only the supplied comparison group. It does not establish a grade, norm, growth score, proficiency classification, or broader population position.

Common mistakes

Do not call a percentage score a percentile, silently switch tie methods, combine incomparable assessments, or report small groups without privacy review.

Learning boundary

Percentile rank is comparison-group dependent

Changing the group changes the percentile. Do not use this output alone for placement or another consequential decision.

Review checklist

Human review before educational use

  • Scores come from one comparable assessment.
  • The comparison group is authorized.
  • The tie method is disclosed.
  • Privacy and reporting rules are followed.

Practical questions

Percentile Rank Grade Calculator questions

What is the difference between percent and percentile?

Percent is points earned divided by points possible; percentile describes relative position in a group.

Why count half of ties?

Midrank places tied observations at the middle of the positions they occupy.

Can I compare different exams?

Only if a valid linking or norming process supports that comparison.
