STEM EVIDENCE WORKBENCH

Lewis Structure Reasoning Concept Diagnostic

Audit charge-adjusted valence totals and proposed bonding and lone electrons while keeping connectivity, octets, resonance, and formal charge review visible.

Runs in this browser tabEditable downloadUp to 500 structured rows and 30,000 characters per field. Use anonymous or fictional labels.

Learning inputs

Build the lewis structure reasoning concept diagnostic

Enter a species label, signed overall charge, claimed total valence electrons, number of bonding pairs drawn, number of individual lone electrons drawn, then element symbol | atom count | valence electrons per neutral atom rows. Count a single, double, and triple bond as one, two, and three bonding pairs. Enter lone electrons rather than lone pairs. Verify valence counts and charge from the assigned species before using the arithmetic result.

Generation uses only the information entered in this tab. It does not fetch sources or make student decisions.

Transparent method

How the lewis structure reasoning concept diagnostic works

Neutral subtotal equals the sum of atom count times neutral-atom valence electrons. Available electrons equal neutral subtotal minus signed overall charge, so a negative charge adds electrons and a positive charge removes them. Assigned electrons equal two times the number of bonding pairs plus the number of lone electrons. Unassigned or excess electrons equal available minus assigned. Both the claimed pool and assigned total are checked independently. Electrons accounted for means the entered pool and proposed drawing use the same charge-adjusted total. A mismatch in claimed total points to atom contributions or charge direction; a mismatch in assigned total points to bond-pair or lone-electron counting. Matching totals remain only a necessary condition. Connectivity can be wrong, atoms can violate expected shells, formal charges can be unfavorable, and several resonance contributors can share the same bookkeeping.

  1. 01
    Before generation

Confirm the prompt, source values, units, signs, notation, precision, and model required by the current course. Keep an untouched copy of observations or responses before changing a row.

  2. 02
    During review

Run the worked example first, inspect every intermediate row, and compare the table with a hand calculation, diagram, number line, periodic table, or approved laboratory method.

  3. 03
    Before use

Record the method, assumptions, units, rounding, limits, and any row that needs review. Use the exported report as editable evidence and verify it independently before assessment or laboratory use.

How to interpret the result

Lewis Structure Reasoning Concept Diagnostic

Before generation

Use this diagnostic during Lewis structure work when an electron-counting error must be separated from connectivity, octet, resonance, or formal-charge reasoning. It calculates the available electron pool and compares that pool both with the claimed total and with electrons assigned to bonds and lone positions. It is valuable as an intermediate checkpoint. It does not generate a structure, determine a central atom, validate expanded octets, or select the best resonance contributor.

Worked example

The carbonate example has one carbon contributing four neutral valence electrons and three oxygens contributing eighteen. The 2- charge adds two electrons, giving twenty-four. Four bonding pairs account for eight electrons and sixteen lone electrons complete the total. Both entered totals agree, so the bookkeeping passes. A full review must still inspect the three equivalent resonance descriptions, octets, formal charges, and whether the bond and lone-electron counts match the drawing.

Formula or methodology

Neutral subtotal equals the sum of atom count times neutral-atom valence electrons. Available electrons equal neutral subtotal minus signed overall charge, so a negative charge adds electrons and a positive charge removes them. Assigned electrons equal two times the number of bonding pairs plus the number of lone electrons. Unassigned or excess electrons equal available minus assigned. Both the claimed pool and assigned total are checked independently.

How to interpret the result

Electrons accounted for means the entered pool and proposed drawing use the same charge-adjusted total. A mismatch in claimed total points to atom contributions or charge direction; a mismatch in assigned total points to bond-pair or lone-electron counting. Matching totals remain only a necessary condition. Connectivity can be wrong, atoms can violate expected shells, formal charges can be unfavorable, and several resonance contributors can share the same bookkeeping.

Common mistakes

Do not subtract electrons for a negative ion, add electrons for a positive ion, count lone pairs as one electron, treat a double bond as one shared pair, change the electron pool to force octets, or accept a structure solely because totals match. Establish the skeleton, count the pool, place electrons systematically, check each atom, calculate formal charges, consider resonance and exceptions, and compare with the model required by the course.

Learning boundary

A calculated pattern still needs subject review

This browser-local workbench applies only the disclosed rules to entered values. It cannot diagnose learning, establish a chemical structure, certify a measurement system, validate an experiment, or replace the method and judgment required by a teacher, curriculum, laboratory, or institution.

Review checklist

Human review before educational use

  • Every value, symbol, sign, unit, and response comes from the intended prompt or evidence source.
  • The implemented arithmetic or scientific rule matches the current course method.
  • Intermediate rows and flagged alternatives have been inspected rather than using only the headline.
  • A teacher or learner verifies the report with an independent method and the original context.

Practical questions

Lewis Structure Reasoning Concept Diagnostic questions

Does Nirmion upload these responses or observations?

No. Processing occurs in the current browser tab. Avoid names and other personal information, and retain authoritative records only in the system approved by the school.

Can the result identify a learner misconception by itself?

No. A matched pattern describes one entered response. Ask the learner to explain, use another representation, and review several evidence sources before deciding the next teaching step.

Can I submit the downloaded report as finished work?

Treat it as an editable calculation aid. Show your own reasoning, use the method requested by the course, cite required sources, and follow the applicable academic-integrity rules.
