Calculation method

How capacitance prefixes pass through farads

The input is multiplied by its farad-per-unit prefix factor and divided by the destination factor. Pico, nano, micro, milli, kilo, and the unprefixed farad remain decimal powers of ten, with labels shown beside symbols.

How many nanofarads are in one microfarad?

One microfarad equals 1,000 nanofarads because micro represents 10^-6 farad and nano represents 10^-9 farad. The three-power prefix difference produces the factor of 1,000. This exact relationship changes only the displayed unit label and number; it does not change the physical capacitor, rating, or tolerance.

Can I use the result to replace one capacitor with another?

Capacitance equivalence is only one requirement. A safe replacement may also depend on voltage rating, polarity, dielectric type, tolerance, temperature range, ripple current, equivalent series resistance, leakage, package, lifetime, frequency behavior, and circuit safety class. Always verify the complete schematic and manufacturer data before making a substitution.

Does this calculate capacitive reactance or stored energy?

No. Capacitive reactance also requires frequency, while stored energy requires voltage. Those are separate calculations with their own assumptions and safety considerations. This page only converts a supplied capacitance among farad prefixes, so it does not infer operating conditions or claim that a component is discharged and safe to handle.
