EDUCATION DECISION WORKBENCH

Assessment Blueprint Builder

Allocate exact item and mark totals across weighted objectives and cognitive demand with auditable rounding.

Runs in this browser tabEditable downloadUp to 500 structured rows and 30,000 characters per field. Use anonymous or fictional labels.

Learning inputs

Build the assessment blueprint builder

Enter exact total items and marks, then objective | weight percent | cognitive demand rows. Weights must total 100%.

Generation uses only the information entered in this tab. It does not fetch sources or make student decisions.

Transparent method

How the assessment blueprint builder works

Raw allocation = objective weight ÷ total weight × total items or marks. Floor values are assigned first, then remaining units go to the largest fractional remainders. A zero-item objective is a coverage gap. A nonzero allocation confirms planned presence only; reviewers must inspect the real items, scoring, and cognitive demand.

Finalize assessable objectives and relative emphasis.

  2. 02
    During review

Write and tag items against the allocation.

Compare the completed form with the blueprint and moderation evidence.

How to interpret the result

Assessment Blueprint Builder

Before generation

Use this before item writing to align the assessment sample with intended learning and stop one easy-to-write objective from dominating the test.

Worked example

A 24-item, 60-mark algebra test allocates four weighted objectives. Integer allocations use largest remainders so both totals remain exact.

Formula or methodology

Raw allocation = objective weight ÷ total weight × total items or marks. Floor values are assigned first, then remaining units go to the largest fractional remainders.

How to interpret the result

A zero-item objective is a coverage gap. A nonzero allocation confirms planned presence only; reviewers must inspect the real items, scoring, and cognitive demand.

Common mistakes

Avoid vague objectives, weights that do not total 100, tagging demand from verbs alone, double counting multi-objective items, or treating blueprint coverage as validity evidence.

Learning boundary

Coverage does not establish validity

The blueprint is a planning artifact. Qualified review must address item quality, bias, access, reliability, security, and interpretation.

Review checklist

Human review before educational use

  • Weights total 100%.
  • Item and mark totals match the specification.
  • Cognitive demand is reviewed from the full task.
  • The completed assessment is independently moderated.

Practical questions

Assessment Blueprint Builder questions

Why do item and mark allocations differ?

A small number of complex items can carry more marks than several brief items.

What if an objective receives zero items?

Increase the total or weight, combine objectives deliberately, or document why it is sampled elsewhere.

Can the builder write questions?

No. It creates a transparent allocation for reviewed item writing.
