Order names and phrases by their alphabetic key

Alphabetizer

Alphabetize one item per line with stable locale collation, ascending or descending order, optional leading-article omission, and deliberate blank-line handling. It is designed for labels and phrases, not CSV columns, semantic categories, or locale-specific library cataloguing rules.

01 / Input

Paste one item on each physical line

Keep each name, title, or phrase on its own line and preserve punctuation that belongs to the item. The field accepts 500,000 characters; blank items can be removed or retained, and A, An, and The can be ignored only for the comparison key.

Complete the required fields to enable this action.

Runs in this tab without an API request.

Product guide

Alphabetize without silently rewriting the labels

This tool separates the text used as a sort key from the item emitted in the result, so ignoring an article does not remove it from the title. Review the complete result in its destination because automated text rules cannot infer every language, house style, data model, or publishing intention.
Step A

Prepare the input

Paste plain-text items rather than a comma-separated row. Leading spaces remain part of the displayed output, so clean accidental indentation first.

Step B

Choose the rule

Choose direction, decide whether leading English articles affect comparison, and choose whether blank lines enter the ordered list.

Step C

Review the output

Inspect names with accents, numbers, or non-Latin scripts against the collation expected by your audience. Exported items remain one per line.

How it works

Stable locale comparison over one item per line

Each normalized physical line receives its original position and a comparison key. Optional article handling removes only an initial A, An, or The from that key. localeCompare performs case-insensitive alphabetic comparison, and the original position breaks equal-key ties so duplicate labels do not jump unpredictably. The algorithm sorts at most the items represented within a 500,000-character input and caps generated output at one million characters. The operation runs in this browser tab, applies explicit bounds before expensive work, and does not send workspace text to a Nirmion API.

Useful when

Prepare readable lists and indexes

Use Alphabetizer when each line is already one complete item and only presentation order needs to change.

  1. Order attendee names, glossary labels, resources, headings, products, or references before a manual review.
  2. Create an index candidate that ignores A, An, and The without deleting those words from displayed titles.
  3. Compare ascending and descending arrangements while retaining duplicate labels in a stable relative order.

Questions answered

Alphabetizer questions

Practical boundaries matter with text tools. These answers explain what is measured, what is retained, and when a manual review is still needed.

Is this the same as Text Sorter?

No. Alphabetizer focuses on phrase labels and optional leading English articles. Text Sorter uses numeric-aware collation and exposes case sensitivity for general line data.

Are duplicate items removed?

No. Every retained line remains in the output. Use Duplicate Line Remover separately when deduplication is intended.

Will accented names be ordered correctly?

The browser applies locale collation, which is useful but may not match a specific institutional policy. Verify high-stakes indexes in their destination.

Privacy and retention

Your draft stays on your device.

Nirmion performs these operations with browser JavaScript. The workspace does not call the catalogue API with your source text, and completed-job content is kept only in this component memory for re-download.

A downloaded file remains in your browser downloads, device storage, backups, and any location where you share it. Clear or close the page when working on a shared device, and avoid pasting secrets into extensions or third-party clipboard managers.

Tool details

A stable browser alphabetizer for line-based labels

Nirmion Alphabetizer orders names, titles, glossary entries, resources, and other complete line-based phrases without uploading the list. Users can reverse the order, retain or remove blank lines, and ignore initial English articles while preserving the original displayed item. Each normalized physical line receives its original position and a comparison key. Optional article handling removes only an initial A, An, or The from that key. localeCompare performs case-insensitive alphabetic comparison, and the original position breaks equal-key ties so duplicate labels do not jump unpredictably. This makes the behavior inspectable and repeatable instead of presenting an unexplained result.

The result downloads as text_nirmion_tools_alphabetized.txt. Stable ties preserve repeated labels, while the page documents that browser collation and a narrow A-An-The rule are not substitutes for specialist cataloguing standards. The operation runs in this browser tab, applies explicit bounds before expensive work, and does not send workspace text to a Nirmion API. Downloading clears the active workspace while the latest three completed results remain available in this tab for re-download.
